How to Plan a Fulfilling Visit to Singapore Botanical Gardens - Tips on Making the Most of Your Tour of the Singapore Botanic Gardens

Often regarded as one of the most breathtaking tourist attractions in Lion City, the Singapore Botanic Gardens is a must-visit highlight for all travellers. Having been a fixture in the city's landscape since colonial times, this sprawling enclave dedicated to blooms and medicinal plants of every hue remains a recreational hotspot like no other. From exploring the garden's lesser-known corners to other practical tips, here are some guidelines on enjoying a grand day out at the venue.

 1. Get a Head Start

Those who wish to enjoy an unforgettable day out exploring the Singapore Botanic Gardens should make sure they are at the venue when the gates open for the day. As a vast expanse spread out over a whopping 82 ha, it may prove impossible to discover all of the green spaces found within this horticultural enclave in a single day. This is why a head start will give visitors more time to venture down the lesser-known paths of this UNESCO World Heritage Site that's well over 150 years of age.  Those who are based at Park Hotel Alexandra or any similar one of the 4-star hotels in Singapore near the Singapore Botanic Gardens will be at a distinct advantage as they can simply walk over to the venue after breakfast and start their tour.

2. Start with the Ginger Garden

The first point of contact visitors will have with the Singapore Botanic Gardens is the Ginger Garden, which is located just after the waterfall that greets visitors who enter from the Tyersall gate. This relaxing enclave not only boasts over 250 types of ginger found in the region but elsewhere in the world and as far as Africa and the Pacific. Relax and unwind by the Amazon water lilies on the surface of the pool before walking over to the National Orchid Garden.

 3. Explore the National Orchid Garden

If there's one enclosure no tour of the Singapore Botanic Gardens would be complete without, it's surely the National Orchid Garden. As one of the main reasons most travellers head to the venue in the first place, this massive area contains nearly a thousand species of orchids and another two thousand hybrid varieties of attractive flowers.  Framed by fountains, the larger than life orchid installations create an otherworldly atmosphere inside the locale. The famed Mist Garden with its award-winning cultivars of orchids is also found here alongside the Silver Arches Display and the Crane Fountain.

 4. Drop by the Learning Forest

Hiking fans can venture down the Learning Forest for an unusual adventure. Belonging to the Tyersall-Gallop Core, the Learning Forest is a series of interconnected walking paths and boardwalks that allow visitors to discover different habitats including lowland rainforests and freshwater forest wetlands.

5. Marvel at the Tanglin Gate Gardens

The Tanglin Gate Gardens is not hard to spot when one is walking around the Singapore Botanic Gardens as it is recognisable by the gazebo of cast iron that has become synonymous with this part of the garden since the 1960s. Tanglin Gate Gardens and the surrounding area are some of the oldest sections of the gardens with some areas dating back to the 1850s. The charming bandstand was once the site of many a ball and military band recital while the Sun Garden, the Bonsai Garden, and the Botany Centre have also been fixtures for centuries.

6. Enjoy a Stroll down Palm Valley or Stop by Symphony Lake

With 200 species of plant varieties to its name, Palm Valley is another corner of the gardens that is perfect for an afternoon stroll.  The Symphony Lake, on the other hand, is one of the best-loved hubs for family gatherings at the Singapore Botanic Gardens as it is ideal for picnicking and enjoying quality time with loved ones.
