How to Cover Sri Lanka's Main Attractions in Two Weeks – Explore the Island in its Entirety!

Wondering what things to do, destinations to visit, and the best order in which to do them? Read on to find out one way that you could arrange your two-week trip to the country. Start with a relaxing stay right after you land at the airport, and then make your way around the country to visit all of the country's major cities and destinations, to uncover what they have to offer!

Step One – Relax and Overcome the Jet lag First of All

There's nothing worse than arriving in a foreign country and feeling like all the strength has been sapped out of you. There's a fix for this though! Before you make more arduous journeys on to other parts of the island, spend a night at one of the hotels in Negombo, Sri Lanka, a short drive away from the Bandaranaike International Airport (the country's main international airport). There are several hotels and resorts that have cropped up in this area in order to provide a much-needed opportunity to recuperate after a long international journey. One example is Amagi Aria - it's one of the few, which has both a swimming pool and a spa on the premises. This means there are ample opportunities to relax and rejuvenate.

Once you arrive in Sri Lanka, especially if you're coming from a colder climate region of the world, you're going to be hit by the tropical heat and humidity. Therefore, a swimming pool is a must to have when you're choosing which hotel to book your first night in. An onsite spa is the next differentiating factor since soothing foot and stress-relief massages can go a long way in helping you recover from the exhaustion of your journey and set the tone for a great start to your two-week Sri Lankan adventure. It's also a great way to leave behind that go-go mentality and slip into that laid-back island vibe that Sri Lanka is known for!

Step Two – Spend a Night or Two in the Commercial Capital

Next, head over to the country's commercial capital. Colombo lies less than an hour's drive away from Negombo. Here, you'll want to hit the country's mega malls, go shopping for all and sundry, check out the nightlife scene (mostly trendy bars and some nightclubs), and visit the major attractions. Some of these include Independence Square, which is great if you want to stretch your leg with some strolls or jogs, Galle Face Beach, the Gangaramaya Buddhist Temple, and the National Museum of Sri Lanka. Apart from the above activities and destinations, another thing that Colombo and its suburbs have become known for in recent years, is the explosion of the café scene. Whether tea or coffee is your beverage of choice, there are plenty of hip and copy cafés where you can relax, grab a bite to eat, a hot or refreshing beverage to sip on, and most importantly, free Wi-Fi to mooch off, so that you can stay connected on the go.

Step Three – Hit the Beaches on the Southwest Coast

Next, make your way further south along the west coastline of the island, and hit the beach towns such as Bentota, Kiddasuwa, Galle, and so on.

Step Four – Visit Yala National Park

Once you're done with the beaches on the southwest coast, head more inland and visit one of the island's most well-known national parks – Yala National Park.

Step Five – Cool-off in the Hills

Head to the Central Province and cool off in the refreshingly chilly highlands. Enjoy tea factory tours, walks in botanic gardens and excursions in the Horton Plains National Park.

Step Six – Hit the Beaches and Go Diving off the East Coast

Enjoy more time in the sun and explore sunken ships as you spend time in the waters off Sri Lanka's East Coast. Towns such as Trincomalee, Passikudah, Kalkudah, and Arugam Bay are the usual favourites.

Step Seven – Discover the North

Now that the country has enjoyed peace for over a decade, the northern regions of the country are open for all to visit. Explore the culture of Sri Lanka's Tamil minority group in Jaffna and visit islands such as Delft Islands, known for its wild horses.
