How to Learn to Ski for Beginners – Tips to Help You Along Before You Visit Whistler

If you’re a newbie when it comes to skiing, it can be daunting to get out there on the slopes without any prior experience. However, everyone has to start somewhere! It’s a positive shame to not try your hand at skiing when you're vacationing in the snow-covered hills that Canada’s popular tourist town of Whistler is famed for. This town is known for snow, snow, and more snow and all the snow-related activities that come with the terrain, such as skiing. So here are some tips to get you started!

Step One – Don’t Be Afraid to Enlist Some Pro Help

A lot of people like to do things all by themselves, and that’s alright – it can be great because it shows independence and perseverance – all things you need to get to the intermediate and advanced stages of a new skill that you’re trying to master. However, right at the start of your journey to learn something entirely new to you, there’s no shame in enlisting some professional help. In fact, it’s recommended. Take a few ski lessons or sign up for a beginner’s course back home, if that’s available where you’re residing before you head off on Whistler vacation. An experienced trainer can show you the ropes and help you master the basics properly, and a good foundation can go a long way. Sadly, many people that try to learn things all by themselves from the onset tend to adopt incorrect postures or practices that could set them back in their mastery of the skill further down the road.

If you’re travelling to Whistler from outside Canada, and your home country doesn’t see a lot of snow, this might be harder for you. In which case, the next best things are to read up online on articles that provide tips for beginners and watch YouTube videos on the same. This way you’ll be more knowledgeable before you arrive in Whistler, and it will help you pick things up faster.

Step Two – Don’t Get in Your Head

When you’re learning a new sport as an adult, it can be easy to get too much in your head about things. Unlike kids, who usually find it easier to adapt to new movements and experiences without questioning things too much, adults tend to have more reservations and get demotivated mentally. Make sure this doesn’t happen to you. When you’re learning how to ski, the movements and equipment may feel extremely foreign and the slopes before you may seem incredibly daunting at first, but just get out of your own head and give it a go – focus more on keeping yourself moving rather than thinking, and tell yourself that it’s ok to learn by falling and picking yourself back up again (literally). That’s how the kids do it! And as long as you’re in moderate shape, it’ll be fine for you as well, as long as you don’t take on slopes that are too ambitious and are trying out your ski moves in the company of a trainer of experienced skiers that you trust to have an eye out for you.

Step 3 – Mix It Up & Keep Going!

When you’re attempting something new, it takes up a lot of mental and physical energy. A break can often do you some good, and give you renewed focus and a novel perspective when you do get back to practising the activity again. It’s the same with skiing. Don’t let yourself get frustrated out on the slopes. Even once you’re at Whistler, and practising your newly earned skiing skills there, remember to take breaks and mix it up with other activities. If you’re staying at a Whistler ski resort with your family or friends, there are bound to be a lot of onsite activities that you can enjoy such as swimming and indoor games – just buddy up with some of the less serious skiers and take a break. For example, accommodation options such as Pan Pacific Whistler Village Centre have amenities such a hot tub, heated outdoor pools, and onsite spas to keep you busy off the slopes.
