How to Plan a Trip to Sri Lanka – A Guide to Survive in a Tropical Island

With the promise of a wonderful vacation, the South Asian island country, Sri Lanka, attracts tourists from around the world. Pristine beaches, varied landscapes, rainforests, national parks, and historic sites are a few details of a holiday spent in Sri Lanka. From novel attractions like the Lotus Tower to historical attractions like Sigiriya, Sri Lanka offers a lot to the curious traveller.

1. When to go

While you can visit Sri Lanka during any month, remember that the island experiences two monsoons. From October through December is the first monsoon season, which brings a heavy downpour. If sightseeing is on your agenda, it's best to avoid this season. May to June is the second monsoon season; it only affects the southern part of the country. September is considered the best month to visit Sri Lanka; this is between the offseason and the high season, which means low hotel prices and fewer tourists.

2. Where to stay

Being a renowned travel destination, Sri Lanka has every facility sought after by tourists. Sri Lanka's accommodation sector is commendable. Sri Lanka top hotels are spread all over the country. Many hotel brands find Sri Lanka to be an excellent location for business, and among them is Amagi Hotels. For the budget traveller, Sri Lanka offers hostels, and for the luxury seeker, Sri Lanka offers luxurious hotels with cutting edge facilities.

3. Attractions of Sri Lanka

It's better to plan your itinerary before your visit. Sri Lanka offers a range of experiences; you should decide how much time you want to spend in Sri Lanka and the things you can do during the time period available to you. Although Sri Lanka is not a very large nation, roads aren't well maintained; a poorly planned travel itinerary could have you stuck in your vehicle for hours on end.

4. First-time visitors

A first-time visitor should visit the most famous Sri Lankan attractions. These include Sigiriya Rock Fortress, historic sites in Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura, and Dambulla. Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is another attraction that should be included in the itinerary. For milder climate conditions and a change in weather, the hill country is ideal for a first-timer. Last but not least, Sri Lanka's beaches are known worldwide for being some of the best beaches in South Asia.

5. Second-time visitors

Second-time visitors should visit Jaffna and Trincomalee. The northern part of the country is where you see a distinct difference in culture. You will discover numerous Hindu temples dedicated to various Hindu deities. Visiting the North is the best way to avoid the southwest monsoon season and enjoy some time at the beach.

6. Getting there

Sri Lankan Airlines offers direct flights to Sri Lanka, and it comes highly recommended. Food is alright, and if your destination is Sri Lanka, there are no long layovers. If you are travelling from the UAE, Emirates or Qatar Airways are the best choices. However, be prepared to spend a few hours in the UAE on a stopover.

7. Getting around

Getting around Sri Lanka is not difficult, but it's not without challenges. Public transport is highly unreliable, but for a tourist, travelling by bus or train can be a great experience – travelling by train from Colombo to Galle or the hill country offers amazing scenery. Taxis are the most comfortable way of travel; there are apps that allow you to book a vehicle from the comfort of your hotel room. Tuk-tuks are the most popular choice of transport. Plus, their rates are reasonable; but always make sure that the tuk-tuk has a functioning meter or negotiate the price before getting in.
