How to Budget for Chiang Rai - All the details you must know!

Do you just love to explore the hidden mysteries and the spectacular sceneries that Chiang Rai has to offer its visitors? But do you also want to plan your trip in a way that this trip won’t break your bank? Then, the best thing would be to look for good deals on accommodation and less expensive modes of transport. Take a quick look at the following suggestions:

 Where to stay?

Tourists passing through Chiang Rai on their way to Laos or Myanmar always stop at Chiang Rai. Those who take the time to visit the province are provided with well-preserved natural and cultural wonders that are comparable to those found in neighbouring north Thai provinces; but still, these hold a special place in the hearts of those who live in Chiang Rai. However, apart from the capital, which is Chiang Rai City, visitors tend to base themselves in the following towns/districts if they are on a budget.

  • Chiang Khong: Chiang Khong is a popular stopping point for tourists who want to visit Laos too. You can find good accommodation in these areas.

  • Mae Sai: This is Thailand's northernmost town. People go on day trips and stay in Mae Sai for the night before crossing the border into Myanmar.

  • Mae Salong: Officially known as Santikhiri, this village is known for the hills, tea plantations and valleys. Hiking, biking, and nature excursions are common activities in this region. The Wang Put Tan tea plantation is the most well-known, with a scenic view of the plantations and surrounding hills.

Besides, you can check out a luxury hotel in Chiang Rai that have seasonal offers. This might fit into your budget and provide you with some luxury. For instance, you can check out properties like Hotel Sooknirund for some decent offers.

Getting around in Chiang Rai

In terms of tourist-friendly attractions and facilities, Chiang Rai is also improving and catching up. While different modes of transportation are available, they are not as numerous as in Chiang Mai. When you get farther away from the city centre, this becomes more difficult. You must carefully schedule your journey and plan out your travel in advance. Here are a few examples of the modes of transport available in Chaing Rai:

Tuk-tuk or Samlor

The tuk-tuk is a three-wheeled motorised rickshaw in Thailand, while the samlor is a three-wheeled manual rickshaw. For short-distance travel, this could be a more flexible and cost-effective alternative. The least expensive fare is about THB 30 per person.

Songthaews

Another mode of public transport in Chiang Rai is Songthaews. It's a veiled pickup truck that is used as a taxi, similar to the jeepney in the Philippines. The least expensive fare is about THB 20 per person.

Walking

You can also stroll through the city centre. If you just would like to see the day or night markets, purchase some souvenirs, or go on a food walk/tour, this is a nice option.

Taxis

These are not practical on a budget travel trip.

Motorcycles or Bicycles

Motorbikes and bicycles are rented by some visitors. It's worth noting that the roads and landscape in Chiang Rai are very hilly. This is a decent choice for those who have the endurance and are up for a challenge; otherwise, you can take a relaxing trip through small towns.

 Private Cars/Vans

Some people, particularly if they are travelling in a group, prefer to rent or hire a private car. You can either drive the car/van yourself or hire a driver. Since some of Chiang Rai's most popular sights and landmarks are very far apart, some people choose this alternative.

 Booking tours

This is the most common choice amongst tourists in Chiang Rai at the moment. You can cover all tourist attractions and activities with an experienced tour guide who can show you the best parts of Chiang Rai.
