1. About Mirissa

The first Mirissa tourist hotel was built in 1980; however, tourism didn't take shape until the 1990s. The town was heavily impacted by the tsunami, which resulted in Mirissa's tourism industry taking a massive blow. However, now the town is a buzzing tourist hotspot like it was always going to be.

2. Getting to Mirissa

A tourist has several options. Taking the taxi is the costliest option, but it is the most comfortable and the fastest; a taxi ride from Colombo to Mirissa will cost you around Rs. 12,000. Thanks to the new highway, you can now get to Mirissa in no time. Getting the bus is another option available to you; buses depart from Colombo Fort, and the final destination is Matara. From Matara, you can get a tuk-tuk, and you'll be in Mirissa in twenty minutes. For a scenic and relaxing trip, choose to travel by train. A bigger part of the journey takes place along the coastline. You'll be dropped off at Weligama, and from there, you can easily find a tuk-tuk to get to hotels in Mirissa Sri Lanka. When travelling by tuk-tuk here, you need to agree on a price before starting the journey, or you should make sure that the vehicle has a meter and that it works.

3. Where to stay

Mirissa is one of the most known tourist spots in Sri Lanka; the town is packed with tourists throughout the year. There is no shortage of lodging choices here; the likes of Sri Sharavi Beach Villas & Spa aren't difficult to find in Mirissa.

4. Whale watching

Your Mirissa trip is not complete until you do some whale watching. You'll be taken out on a boat to a place with the likeliest chance of seeing blue whales, dolphins and turtles. The period from November to March is the best time for the activity.

5. Coconut Tree Hill

The signature feature of Mirissa, the Coconut Tree Hill, tops any list of things to do in Mirissa. The red promontory is frequently photographed by travellers, and it has become a popular Instagram feature. This privately owned coconut estate can be visited at any time without any cost. The dome-shaped rock is a 10-minute easy hike. Once you are at the top, you'll be gifted with mesmerizing views of the sea and the beach.

6. Weligama

For some off the beaten path travelling, visit Weligama. Popular with surfers, Weligama is only a 15-minute drive from Mirissa. With some excellent accommodation options on offer, Weligama draws a wide range of travellers who want to relax on the beach.

7. Visit Galle Fort

The old Dutch fort is another photographed feature of Southern Sri Lanka. More like a small town than a fort, Galle Fort was built during the Portuguese colonial era; however, it has roots going back to the Dutch colonial period. Inside the fort are various attractions, including boutique shops, restaurants and cafes.

8. Other things to do

Surfing is another activity you can try here. The period of November to March is the best time for surfing. Sampling local dishes is another thing you should do; Mirissa is one of the places that offer the best seafood dishes. Soaking up sun rays on the beach is another Mirissa must-do.
