A visit to the Tian Tan Buddha Statue also known as the Big Buddha is a favourite attraction in Hong Kong. This seated statue of the Buddha is 34 meters in height and rests above the Po Lin monastery on Lantau Island. This happens to be one of the biggest seated Buddha statues in the world and took 12 years to finish. It is a magnificent sight up close and from afar. The environment is also beautiful, surrounded by verdant forests facing the sea and islands. The Buddha statue can be reached by bus; however, the most scenic route is via the scenic Ngong Ping cable car. The ride lasts 25-minutes and stretches over 5km. The ride ends at Ngong Ping Village, a small tourist village. A relaxing walk through the village will lead you to the Big Buddha and the monastery.

2. Dragons Back hike

This is the perfect escape from the busy cityscape of Hong Kong. This is one of Hong Kong's renowned hiking trails. The trek path is filled with picturesque scenes overlooking the sea.
The hike is fairly comfortable, start the hike at Section 8, which is the bus stop To Tei Wan. From this limit, the road takes you across a small distance. Following this, it is predominantly a descent leading you onto Big Wave Bay. From there you can either catch a minibus or taxi to Shek O. These are wonderful seasides for swimming and there is a range of restaurants specialising in excellent seafood. Bring water with you on the hike plus a swimming suit, towel and sunscreen.

3. Tai O Fishing Village tour

A visit to the Tai O Fishing Village is an experience unlike anything else in Hong Kong. Over the years, however, the village has become a popular site for tourists. But it is much less crowded than the busy streets and markets of Hong Kong.
The people who live here are known as the Tanka people who have found their homes on Lantau Island. Their houses are built on stilts above the tidal waters. The people here are used to a more tranquil way of life. Their lives as per tradition are formed around fishing and selling seafood. Villagers also earn money through tourism. Boat tours and rides are common things to do here. Visit the local markets here, one is permitted to sample the fresh seafood as well. If lucky you catch a rare sighting of the elusive and threatened pink dolphin in the nearby waters.

4. Chi Lin Nunnery and Nan Lian Garden temple

Chi Lin Nunnery and Nan Lian Garden temple was first constructed in the 1930s and later rebuilt in the 1990s to suit the style of the Tang Dynasty. The buildings within this temple are all made from wood. The exterior of the temple grounds is beautiful and meticulously managed in the arrangement of a Chinese Garden. Bonsai trees and a Lotus Pond Garden with many other Lilly ponds are spread across the gardens. The Chi Lin Nunnery is located nearby and is a retreat for Buddhist nuns. Both sites are found in Diamond Hill, in the Kowloon District.

5. Lamma Island

Take a ferry to Lamma Island, a beautiful island with the most beautiful landscape and pristine beaches you can find in Hong Kong. Ferryboats can take you to the Sok Kwun Wan and Yung Shue Wan, both are quaint villages with little to no roads. The site is one of the least popular holiday destinations, so the seclusion will be idyllic. Only 8000 people live on this island and it is a destination recommended by popular travel blog sites the likes of Vacation Gateway! Try hiking between these two villages, each village have quite a few nice restaurants as well.
