How to Spend A Week in Barbados – The Perfect Caribbean Escape

A Caribbean island known for its rich heritage, idyllic beaches and stunning nature too, Barbados has much to offer be it for families, couples or those looking for solo travel adventures. If you have five days to spend here, these are some ideas of what you can do for an unforgettable holiday experience!

Plan How to Get to Barbados

Before delving on things to do in Barbados, you must consider how you plan to get there. The island's main airport is the Grantley Adams International Airport in Seawell and it's the main arrival and departure hub; there are direct flights here from Europe, the United States, Central America and Canada.

You could also make use of convenient charter flights; Caribbean getaways to Barbados can be enjoyed on flights offered by operators such as interCaribbean Airways. The island is a popular port of call for cruise ships too which provide another way in which to get here; the time you have to spend on the mainland may be limited though depending on the cruise.

Spend Time at Beaches

Barbados features picturesque beaches where you can soak up the sun or enjoy swimming amidst shades of azure. The great thing is, there are several idyllic stretches of shoreline to choose from, though it would be convenient to find accommodation close by as well. Popular choices include Dover Beach, Silver Sands Beach, Crane Beach and Mullins Beach.

Explore Bridgetown

You can spend time exploring the island's capital, Bridgetown, an ideal place to soak up some local culture and take in British colonial architecture. Historic Bridgetown and the 17th-century Garrison have been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, while other key attractions include the Parliament Buildings, St. Michael's Cathedral and Nidhe Israel Synagogue.

Enjoy Underwater Adventures

There is much to discover in the ocean surrounding Barbados as well, more specifically, diverse coral and marine life that thrive under the waves. An activity the whole family can enjoy, snorkelling is well worth trying especially at places like Carlisle Bay where you may encounter turtles too! Of course, for more in-depth exploration, nothing beats diving which gives you a chance to visit some of the many wrecks around the island.

The previously mentioned Carlisle Bay is a great location for divers with spots for beginners as well as seasoned pros; you also get the chance to head to more than seven shipwrecks, some of which date back to World War One or Two. The nation's largest shipwreck, Stavronikita, is another diving hotspot, while the Cement Plant Piers with its coral growth and diverse marine life is worth seeing as well.

Head to the St. Nicholas Abbey

Dating to the 17th century, St. Nicholas Abbey is only one of three Jacobean mansions that are in the Western Hemisphere and features some remarkable architecture and design. Those on a tour here will be able to see the typical furniture, china and antiques that were used at the time; you can also visit the rum distillery where St. Nicholas Abbey Rum is produced. Equally enthralling are the picturesque gardens around this site and not to be missed is a chance to take a narrated train ride on offer to Cherry Tree Hill.

Visit Famous Local Caves

Make time to also visit two well-known caves, each with something different to experience. Harrison's Cave is in the central uplands and is known for its intriguing stalactites and stalagmites as well as deep pools and streams; here, you can take a tram ride through the cave and learn more about the forming of the island. Also popular is what is known as the Animal Flower Cave; inside, one will find some quite curious looking Christmas tree worms along with an opening that provides stunning views of the ocean below.
