How to get to Galle from Colombo

When you are visiting the island paradise of Sri Lanka, the first major city you will encounter is sure to be Colombo. Full of hustle and bustle, the commercial capital of Sri Lanka is a hub for business and trade. This means that you are likely to experience quite a bit of traffic and noise, so it is always wiser to make a move down south to the quieter cities of Sri Lanka.

Galle is generally everyone’s first stop on this escape from Colombo, for its stunning architecture, great food and even better beachside views!

Getting to Galle from Colombo

When you arrive at the city of Colombo from the airport, there are several options at your disposal. If you have taken a cab, you can continue towards Galle, or you can opt to take the bus or train as well.

Given that many things such as bus times and train times change over time, it is important you do some research when planning your trip to ensure that you are not disappointed by a change in schedule or price!

Each method will have its positives and negatives however when traversing the 126KM distance to your destination, you are going to be guaranteed some amazing views along the way.

Taking a car to Galle

One of the fastest ways to get to your destination will be taking a car. You can arrange for a cab company to meet you as you arrive from the airport. The benefits are mainly, that you will be travelling in comfort away from any crowded buses or trains and that you will be able to enjoy the cool air conditioning and blast your music.

Something to keep in mind is also that this is likely going to be the most expensive option. This means that you will need to have a budget allocated so that you can visit Galle and return to Colombo via a cab if needed as well.

Luckily, the development of the South Expressway in Sri Lanka has dramatically cut down the time taken to reach your destination. Uber is also an option to select from as they now offer long haul cab rides so that you may be able to easily coordinate your transport as soon as you arrive in the country.

Take the train for the view

The train is certainly, the preferred mode of transport for many people. They do so out of necessity given the lack of traffic, low prices and most importantly the amazing vistas that are visible through your windows as you speed through the country.

When travelling to Galle by train, keep in mind that there are several classes of train tickets. The lowest class will likely be crowded and you may experience some trouble trying to get a seat if there have been many other stops along the way. You can, however, opt to pay for a first-class ticket which will be significantly more expensive but it will offer you the luxuries of comfortable seats, WIFI and food during your journey.

Where to stay?

This would likely be the next question to answer on your trip. Once you get to Galle, depending on how you arrive, you may be quite famished or weary and will quickly like to freshen up before continuing on your journey.

You can choose a hotel in Galle such as the Fortress Resort and Spa to rest your weary bones and grab a bite to eat. This is unavoidable if you are travelling with young kids, who will most certainly be tired with all the commuting!
