Diving lessons

Although diving may sound like a rather daunting – and for some, a scary experience – with proper training and guidance one can acquire the right knowledge and practice needed to swim alongside mesmerising creatures of the ocean. Many Pasikuda hotels are within easy reach of professional diving centres and if you’re a total beginner staying at a property such as Maalu Maalu Resort & Spa, you will even get to grab a quick diving lesson from an experienced diver – in shallow waters to begin with, of course! If you’re coming for a short stay in Sri Lanka, it is recommended that you do an open-water referral course where you’re coming from so that you can spend more days experiencing deep-sea diving.

Diving equipment

An integral part of your diving equipment is the regulator, which is the mouthpiece through which you breathe during the time spent underwater. It is advised that you have your own regulator, especially during this pandemic – it doesn’t matter how clean your resort claims to be, you can never be too safe! Besides, as you become familiar with your regulator over time, it would help you become confident in your skills. BCD, or the Buoyancy Control Device, is the next vital part of your diving assemblage. It consists of a vest that could be inflated or deflated to regulate your buoyancy underwater. For safe diving, a wet suit is usually recommended – a 3 mm wet suit should be enough if you don’t plan to venture deep down into the ocean. In case you do, a wet suit ranging from 5-8 millimetres is highly recommended.

Diving costs

Depending on your diving school and whether or not you’re renting out diving gear, the cost of diving may vary. It’s quite sensible to do thorough research on the available diving centres of your holiday destination by comparing prices and package details. For example, in Sri Lanka, you can opt for diving packages ranging between 55-315USD. You can choose from an array of packages based on the number of diving sessions and days.

The time needed to get certified

Each diving centre offers various schedules to get you certified – things would also depend on your knowledge and skills to pull it off! However, if you indeed complete your course work beforehand, it wouldn’t take more than three to four days to complete the certification course for a basic diving session. Find an instructor that your comfortable with and plan your schedule with them to reap the maximum out of your time spent in the diving destination. In no time, you’d be able to dive and witness the magnificent marine life for your own eyes.
