How to select the perfect smart watch

Smartwatches are what the future is all about. They are easy to take with you anywhere you go since it is strapped onto your wrist and acts as an extension of your phone. There are a few smartwatches that are also focused on health rather than showing you the notifications from your phone. Here are a few tips for selecting the right smartwatch.

OS and phone compatibility

Smartwatches are meant to be connected to your phone, so you have your applications at the tip of your fingers when necessary. But what about compatibility? When it comes to the Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Watch Active 2 which are powered by Tizen, they work better with an Android OS. Samsung phones in particular work best with these watches. Android headsets as well as iPhones can be connected to the watch as well.

The Fitbit Versa 2 works great with iPhones as well as Android phones. Although, when used with Android phones, there is an extra feature which allows you to send quick replies to text messages.

Fossil, LG and Huawei run on Google Wear OS which is compatible best with Android phones. The Apple Watch is only compatible with iPhones.

Make sure the smartwatch you select is compatible with the OS on your phone before going ahead and purchasing it.

OLED vs LCD

These smartwatches use either AMOLED or LCDs to give you a brighter, enriched colour display. The only shortcoming to this is that it zaps the devices' battery faster. Usually, the battery life of a smartwatch may last for days or weeks, but if you want super durability its best to go for a black and white display.

Watches that happen to be more expensive offer finer displays allowing more detailed icons and colours to be shown. OLED was first installed in Galaxy Gear in 2013 and was then adopted by Apple for the first-generation Apple Watch.

Touch vs Touchless

Trying to operate your smartwatch by touch can seem a little clumsy with the tiny icons and smaller surface area. Therefore, in most watches, the OS has been programmed to display notifications on a card basis so you can swipe to dismiss it. But there is a whole lot of swiping involved when you need to open an application and go through menus within the application.

Apple decided to add a combo to the watch with a touch display, digital crown and side button. The Samsung Gear and Samsung Galaxy watches have a bezel which allows you to rotate to scroll through apps and menus, it includes touch as well.

Personalisation

You surely want your watch to look fancy on your wrist and this is possible with smartwatches these days. You can choose what colour your strap will be and which material to use for it as well. You can also go for something that allows you to change bands and buckles with third party items. Even major fashion brands like Luis Vuitton have made their way into the smart device industry to produce more fashionable devices.

If you are purchasing devices from Sri Lanka, smartwatches are available on online stores like Urban.lk which offer quite a choice of brands.
