How to plan a visit to the Souq

During these unsure times where the COVID-19 thrives at many places in the world, our journeys and travels must be planned with adequate precautions – and yes, even it's just a visit to the souq! As at present, Qatar is enjoying eased up restrictions as a result of implementing provisions in phase 2 of its government's master plan. So, here's how you can enjoy this freedom as a responsible traveller.

Become a responsible traveller
During Phase 2, souqs in Qatar are only allowed 50 percent of their usual headcount. At each entry point, all employees and visitors will be subject to a thermal screening and it would help the relevant officials immensely if you cooperate with these procedures. Those who are with a temperature of 38 Celsius degrees wouldn't be allowed entry, so make sure that you have your temperature checked before leaving your hotel in Qatar such as Souq Waqif Boutique Hotels by Tivoli to avoid unnecessary disappointments. Also, install EHTERAZ – a smartphone app that would include your health record from official entities. Unless you belong to the green category, which is reserved for those who do not display any COVID-19 symptoms, you wouldn't be permitted to enter the souq.

Always maintain social distancing
When you do visit a souq such as Souq Waqif, make sure that you adhere to the physical distancing measures in place by that entity. Try your best to always follow floor markers inside that have been placed there to maintain the required distance. Physical distancing is strictly followed at these souqs and both staff members and visitors are expected to respect these measures.

Guard yourself against infection
Just because you're on vacation, don't assume that the coronavirus is too! All jokes aside, it is vital and is strictly emphasised that you must wear a mask at all times to help prevent the spread of the virus. Visitors are also encouraged to wear gloves as it would further help you to stop acquiring the virus if you happen to touch a virus-strewn surface. Always be mindful about where you put your hands and avoid touching your face or scratching your nose when inside the souq – if you must scratch your face, however, make sure you wash your hands thoroughly and sanitise them before doing so.

Handling money and usage of bags
All vendors in the souq are encouraged to accommodate card payments, and you should think of going along that line as well. After each payment, grab a tissue and your sanitiser to disinfect your card – you can never be too sure when it comes to dealing with a virus, especially since it cannot be detected by our naked eye. Moreover, if you're used to carrying reusable bags, for time being, think of replacing them with recyclable paper bags or single-use bags.

Opening hours and parking
Opening hours of the souq are restricted to 12 hours daily – from 8 in the morning to the same hour at night. Parking spaces are also limited to maintain social distancing, so if you're staying at one of the hotels in Doha Qatar located close to the souq, think of walking down to it instead of taking your car.
