Reach Yala by air

The Bandaranaike International Airport or Katunayake International Airport is an airport that is lying on the outskirts of Colombo. It handles flights that come from all over the world including Europe, America, Africa, Australia, and other parts of Asia. Once in Sri Lanka, the speediest way to reach Yala from this airport would be an air transfer. You will have to first fly over to Hambantota Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport, which will be a 45-minute flight, and then travel to Yala National Park employing other means.

Reach Yala by Train

The journey from Colombo-Fort Railway station towards Yala should take about less than 5 hours by train. From Colombo-Fort Station, the earliest train that would stop on its way to Haputale leaves at 5:55 am, which is expected to reach Haputale by 2:21 pm. If you're hoping to travel by night and arrive at Haputale by morning, then it's recommended to take the daily night mail train, which leaves Colombo-Fort at 8:30 pm and usually reaches Haputale around 5.28 am. A second-class ticket may cost you around 470LKR while a third-class ticket would be priced at 300LKR. From Haputale, it would take you around three hours to reach Yala National Park.

Reach Yala by private vehicle

Yala National Park is located approximately 300 kilometres away from Katunayake International Airport if you travel via Southern Expressway. The roads found in Sri Lanka between these two destinations are usually in good condition, which lets many tourists drive from the airport to Yala National Park without any hassle. If you're staying at a Colombo hotel, then it would be easier to travel to Kottawa and enter the Southern Expressway from there. If you're travelling from Mattala Rajapaksha International Airport, you will have to travel along Lunugamwehera Road, after which you can reach Yala National Park via Tissamaharama. A pre-arranged vehicle would be the most convenient way of reaching one of the Tissamaharama hotels where you can refresh and rest for a bit before you start your adventure in Yala National Park.

Reaching Yala by bus

If you're thinking of getting to Yala by bus, you can board one from the Bastian Mawatha Bus Terminal in Colombo to reach Kataragama. The journey to Kataragama will take approximately 6 hours – on your way you can get out at Tissamaharama, after which you can hail your pre-arranged vehicle and whisk away to a property such as Kithala Resort, which lies close to Yala National Park.
