How to Prepare for a Post-COVID-19 Holiday

As lockdowns continue to ease and travel restrictions (both local and international) slowly but surely begin to lift, you can finally start thinking about that much-needed getaway. Of course, taking a holiday these days is not as straight forward as it used to be and there are many things you will have to consider in keeping with the "new normal". Here are some insights that will help as you begin to plan your trip.

Choose the Destination with Care

First off, carefully decide where you are going on holiday. Many people are opting to travel within their countries due to several reasons; these include airports being closed either locally or at international destinations, lack of traveller confidence and the prevalence of super deals to promote domestic tourism. Take such factors into consideration when making your decision and if travelling abroad, make sure to check what the COVID-19 situation and protocols are like there.

Consider Your Health When Preparing

It is important you also take into account your health before setting out; if you have a cold or cough or are recovering from an illness, your immune system may be weak and this may not be the best time to travel. If you do have any concerns always consult a doctor beforehand. Additionally, keep in mind that you will need to take extra precautions when travelling and source enough face masks, hand sanitisers, surface sanitising wipes, etc.

Check for Updates Regularly

The situation with COVID-19 is in constant flux and a destination which may have been deemed "safe" initially, might suddenly have an outbreak. This can happen in regions within a country too. With this in mind, make sure to constantly check for updates and get your information from reliable sources.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) is a great source of information as are official government websites which provide various guidelines. There are also online resources such as Travel News Talk where you can find the latest news on destinations including COVID-19 related updates.

Plan Your Itinerary and Be Flexible

While planning a holiday itinerary by looking up a world travel guide is something most travellers will do, you have to keep in mind that due to COVID-19, things have radically changed. Depending on where you are headed to, attractions may be closed or may only allow limited numbers of visitors; added to this, is that local events or festivals could also be suddenly cancelled or postponed. With that in mind, have several backup options of things to do and as mentioned, keep checking for updates.

Take Transport Factors into Account

You will also have to consider the mode of transport to use which can also be impacted by COVID-19, especially air travel. If heading abroad, first check to see if flights are available to your destination; since the situation can change quickly, consider flights that offer free cancellation or the option to amend or rebook the dates. Some of these will incur additional charges so look into that as well. If possible, consider driving to a destination which would mean limited contact with others on your way there.

Find Suitable & "Safe" Accommodation

When looking for suitable accommodation, the rates or location should not be the only factors you take into consideration. Make sure the place you stay at is following strict hygiene and health guidelines / protocols be it proper disinfection of rooms and public places to social distancing rules.

If you're looking to limit contact with others, staying at an apartment or villa rental is worth considering. Additionally, check to see if the property offers free or flexible cancellation policies which are always good to have especially during these times when plans may suddenly have to change.
