How to plan a 2-day trip to Nuwara Eliya

A city filled with breathtaking beauty, Nuwara Eliya is a famous holiday destination that is adored by both local and foreign tourists. Nestled amid misty hilltops, Nuwara Eliya boasts of many attractions that would make you sigh in wonder. Here's what you can include in your two-day itinerary to Nuwara Eliya.

Day One – Hike towards a stunning cascade

On the day that you plan to leave for Nuwara Eliya, you can ask your guide to pick you up from your hotel and take you towards this scenic city in the heart of Sri Lanka. As it would be a pretty early ride, you may need to get some breakfast along the way. It would be best if you plan on visiting the Ramboda Falls once you reach Nuwara Eliya if you've still got time to check into your hotel. Located within a driving distance from properties such as Galway Heights, Ramboda falls can be accessed at the Pussellawa region in Nuwara Eliya, at the Ramboda Pass. Ramboda falls consist of twin waterfalls that are formed by two tributaries of Kotmale River. The two falls combine at one point, making a 'Y' shape, which is quite an uncommon sight. Upon returning to town, you can look forward to enjoying the delicious local cuisine from the street eateries, or at your hotel. Day One – Experience the scenic beauty of the city

After a relaxing afternoon at your hotel, you can plan on visiting the Hakgala Botanical Gardens. The second-largest of the five botanical gardens of Sri Lanka, Hakgala Botanical Gardens were founded in the year of 1861. It was first used for the cultivation of a medicinal plant called Cinchona. Afterward, it was used as a tea plantation before being transformed into a botanical garden with over 10,000 species of colourful tropical and sub-tropical plants. Located around 16 kilometres from Nuwara Eliya, these gardens are accessible via Nuwara Eliya-Badulla Main Road. In the evening, as the mist swirls around Lake Gregory's banks, you can look forward to enjoying a scenic boat ride, or even a balloon ride, enjoying the splendid atmosphere of the surroundings. You can plan to spend the rest of the evening, relaxing with your loved ones at your hotel premises.

Day Two – Explore unique cultural aspects

Early the next morning, check out of your hotel to embark on a cultural expedition in 'Little England.' The Seetha Amman Temple is set in an idyllic landscape beside a bubbling stream. Located approximately one kilometer away from attractions such as Hakgala Botanical Gardens, this temple can be found in Seetha Eliya. It is believed that this place is where King Ravana held Sita as a captive. Adjacent to this temple is another temple that is dedicated to Hanuman, the monkey-god, who played a major role in rescuing Sita from Sri Lanka.

Day Two – Discover the production of Ceylon Tea

After touring around Seetha Eliya, your next stop can be the Mackwoods Labookellie Tea Factory in Nuwara Eliya. Covering an impressive area of 27,000 acres, this historical tea factory was founded by Captain William Mackwood in 1841. The company has remained with the Mackwoods family until 1956, after which it was passed to Mr. N. S. O. Mendis, after which it became a pioneer in the management of tea estates. Here, you will be able to gain insight into the local ways of tea production, along with the realisation of how conducive the city's climate is to make the tea plantations thrive. After a delectable lunch break, you will be escorted and dropped at your hotel in Colombo or Negombo.
