How to make sure your first time visit to Hong Kong will be memorable
Hong Kong is a diverse destination with so much to offer for any type of traveller. If you are a foodie, expect the most amazing culinary journeys of your life. If you are a nature lover, then consider your interests covered as well despite the urban appearance. Culture, history, art and everything else is just waiting to be explored! Here are a few tips and places to visit to make your first experience memorable.
A few tips for when you arrive
The currency in Hong Kong is the Hong Kong Dollar. There are many ATMs around so enable the International withdrawal on your card. When it comes to payments in stores, 50% of places here would accept American Express while most places, in general, accept VISA and Master cards.
Hong Kong has 4 seasons throughout the year and is not a tropical country as many think it is. Summers are very hot while winters can be fairly cold. The ideal times to visit would be from May to early June and from September to November.
The official language here is Cantonese but the locals also speak in English, they are at least alright with the basics. All the signs are always in two languages, so it's easy to get around.
Public transport is convenient, clean and efficient in Hong Kong. No sooner you arrive, purchase an Octopus card so you will be able to get about the city with ease.
There are plenty of 4-star hotels in Hong Kong along with boutique and other high-end options. You could opt for a stay on Hong Kong Island or in Kowloon. A few hotels like Park Hotel Hong Kong offer airport transfers as well for convenience.
Visit The Peak
Victoria Peak is the highest point in Hong Kong, so you could only imagine how lovely the view is from the top. You could climb all the way up there or opt for the Peak Tram. If you will be taking the Peak Tram, you'll have to buy your tickets at the entrance. You can even purchase entrance tickets to the Peak Tower from here. There are 3 viewpoints here – Sky Terrace for which you will need an entrance ticket at the Peak Tower, Peak Galleria and Lion's Pavilion, on the other hand, are free. The vistas of the city from here are simply breath-taking and must not be missed!
Visit the fishing village – Stanley
Did you ever dream there would be a slow side to life in Hong Kong? Visit Stanley if you don't believe it! This was the village where the British had their last base before surrendering to the Japanese army in 1941. Today the place has transformed into a market selling souvenirs.
The Murray House is the main attraction here. It is a Victorian-style building that was initially situated in Central. It was demolished and moved to Stanley in the 1980s. The village is great for a relaxing day out if you need a change from the fast-paced city. Try not to visit during weekends as it can get quite busy.
Embark on a sunset cruise
Duckling and Aqua Luna are both old Chinese junk boats that have now been restored and offer sunset cruises with wine and dinner! It is the most romantic experience to indulge in when in Hong Kong. Instead of going the full way around, get off at Tsim Sha Tsui and spend the evening here. Have dinner at one of the many restaurants and watch the mesmerising light show. You can hop a Star Ferry and get back to Hong Kong.
