How to travel in Sri Lanka using different modes of transport?

Sri Lanka may be a relatively small island but that doesn't mean there isn't much to explore for intrepid travellers. Of course, part of the adventure is the journey to each destination since the landscapes are so diverse be it the coastlines, mountains, jungles or bustling cities. Here is a guide to some of the most popular modes of transport in Sri Lanka that you can use to plan some unforgettable adventures.

By Bus

Travelling by bus is one of the cheapest ways to get around be it within cities or even long-distance journeys. Both public and private buses are available; for long journeys, private buses are better since they have air conditioning, don't make periodic stops like public buses and normally don't take standing passengers so you get a seat.

Buses usually have an English signboard in the front and a good idea would be to board them at the main bus stations; here, you can ask people for help in finding the right bus stand for your destination and get a seat as well.

By Train

Equally cost-effective is the train which provides the added advantage of giving you the chance to take in some truly spectacular views along the way. An extensive rail network connects most major locations in the country it's always better to book ahead to ensure getting a seat.

The journey to the mountains to what is known as the Hill Country is one of the most scenic train rides there is. Travel by rail to places like Pasikuda on the east coast is equally impressive; it provides an ideal way in which to get to one of the luxury hotels Sri Lanka has to offer in this part of the island.

By Plane

If you are looking to enjoy a unique sightseeing experience, you can consider making use of domestic flights in Sri Lanka. Many such flights can be taken from the main Bandaranaike International Airport and connect key destinations be it landing at small domestic airports or select bodies of water. Additionally, they cut down on travel time significantly as well.

For example, one of the most well-known holiday destinations is Trincomalee home to key east coast attractions and hotels from hospitality brands the likes of Uga Escapes. To get here by car from the airport it would take approximately seven hours, though by plane it's only around 50 minutes!

By Tuk-Tuks or Taxis

When it comes to travelling short distances, especially within a main city or town, tuk-tuks and taxis are best. An iconic three-wheeled vehicle in Asia, tuk-tuks can easily be hailed from the road. Some have meters, while others don't; in the case of the latter, make sure you negotiate the price before beginning the journey.

Taxis or cabs are privately run and provide travel in air-conditioned comfort. While you won't be able to hail them off the street, you can make use of ride-hailing apps; Uber is available in Sri Lanka too, along with local alternatives such as PickMe and YOGO. These ride-hailing apps have options for booking tuk-tuks as well.

By Private Vehicle

Another alternative would be to hire private vehicles which will give you more flexibility when it comes to travel; you also have the chance to plan your route and make stops where and when you want.
There are several local car hire companies to choose from which feature a range of vehicles, be it self-drive options or those which come with a driver / guide.

Keep in mind though, depending on where you plan to go, the kind of vehicle you will need can vary; for example, when exploring national parks like Yala, a 4WD vehicle will be needed.
