Sri Lanka has long been known as a beach paradise, and indeed there are many fantastic beaches to choose from all across Sri Lanka’s coastline. Now, if you’re staying at one of the hotels in Colombo City – for example, the Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo – you might be tempted to just head to the nearest beach and lounge around. While that may be a relaxing way to spend the day, you can always take things up a notch and try out some of the exciting water sports on offer. Indeed, you can try out activities like surfing, jet-skiing, and wind-surfing out on the water. What’s more, if you’re staying in areas like Hikkaduwa, you can dive beneath the waves and experience the many exciting varieties of marine life that are native to the island’s waters.

The Thrills of the Bush

Sri Lanka has been cited many times as one of the best locations to go on a safari outside of Africa. This is in large part due to the numerous national parks dotted all across the island. These vast tracts of wilderness are home to an array of fantastic wildlife – from large and small to the downright bizarre. Parks such as Yala and Wilpattu are especially well-known for the large and charismatic fauna they harbour. A safari ride through any of these locations can net you fantastic sights such as grazing elephant herds, foraging sloth bears, or even a leopard stalking through the landscape. For those who really want to get in touch with their wild side, there are plenty of tour operators that offer camping out in the bush. It’s a fantastic opportunity to sleep under the stars surrounded by the sounds and smells of the wild.

Hiking Through the Mountains

Sri Lanka’s central hill country is where you’ll find some of the most scenic and picturesque landscapes in the entire country. Here you’ll find rolling hills covered in verdant greenery stretching as far as the eye can see as well as towering mountains that seem to be reaching for the heavens. Anyone of these imposing behemoths can make for a fantastic hike and climb. Some of the most popular hiking destinations include the Knuckles Mountain Range. Areas like this are not only full of natural beauty, they are rich in all manner of biodiversity. As you trek through the mountains, you’re sure to see endemic species like the purple-faced leaf monkey and the brilliantly coloured Ceylon magpie. In fact, a majority of Sri Lanka’s endemic bird and butterfly varieties can only be found up here in the hills.

Cultural Adventures

Amidst all the natural beauty Sri Lanka is blessed with, you’ll also find the remnants of a rich and storied past that spans back thousands of years. Uncovering Sri Lanka’s past and the mysteries it holds can be an adventure in its own right. There’s plenty of historical locations to visit in the country – some of the highlights include the sacred city of Anuradhapura and the Sigiriya Fortress. Coastal regions such as Galle and Colombo tell the tale of Sri Lanka’s dealing with the colonial powers of Europe.  There are also feature-rich museums at these locations which will help piece together the lore and stories associated with each region.
